How to Calculate an Average

The average (also called the mean) is one of the most common calculations in math and statistics. To find a simple average, add all values together and divide by the number of values. For example, the average of 80, 90, and 70 is (80 + 90 + 70) / 3 = 80.

A weighted average accounts for the relative importance of each value. Instead of treating all values equally, you multiply each value by its weight, sum the products, and divide by the total weight. This is exactly how your GPA is calculated: each course grade is weighted by its credit hours.

This calculator also shows additional statistics for the simple average mode: sum (total of all values), median (middle value when sorted), min/max (smallest and largest values), and range (difference between max and min).

Simple Average vs. Weighted Average

With a simple average, every number has equal importance. The average of 90 and 70 is 80. But in a weighted average, some values matter more. If 90 has a weight of 3 and 70 has a weight of 1, the weighted average is (90×3 + 70×1) / (3+1) = 85, which is closer to 90 because it carries more weight.

Weighted averages are used for GPA calculations (where courses have different credit hours), portfolio performance (where investments have different sizes), and survey analysis (where responses are weighted by demographics).

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between mean and median?

The mean (average) adds all values and divides by count. The median is the middle value when sorted. For the set {70, 80, 95}, the mean is 81.67 and the median is 80. The median is less affected by extreme values (outliers), making it useful when data is skewed.

How is GPA calculated?

GPA is a weighted average where each course grade is weighted by its credit hours. Multiply each grade by its credits, sum those products, then divide by total credits. For example: Math (3.5, 4 credits) + English (3.0, 3 credits) = (3.5×4 + 3.0×3) / (4+3) = 3.29 GPA.

Can I use this for calculating test score averages?

Absolutely. Use the Simple Average mode to find the average of your test scores, or use the Weighted Average mode if different tests carry different weights (e.g., midterm worth 30%, final worth 50%, quizzes worth 20%).
