How to Study From Lecture Slides When There Are 350 of Them and 8 Days
Your first college exam is 350 slides away and the professor barely explained half of them. Here is how to study from lecture slides without taking notes on every single one, with an 8-day plan built around the slide count.
A first-year on r/studytips this week has a biology exam in 8 days, 350 slides of material, a professor who "only talks vaguely about the content," and a plan. The plan is to take notes on every slide. They already suspect it'll take too long. They're right, and two more posts in the same sub this week asked the same thing about a semester's worth of weekly decks.
Learning how to study from lecture slides is a different skill from studying a textbook, and nobody teaches it. A textbook was written to be read. A slide deck was written to be talked over. On its own it's a pile of headings, bullets and diagrams with the explanation missing, and the missing part is what the exam tests.
So here's a method that treats the deck as what it is, an index to the course rather than the course itself, and an 8-day plan built around the slide count.
Why taking notes on every slide fails
Rewriting 350 slides is rereading with a pen. It feels like work because your hand is moving, but the mental job is copying, and copying doesn't force you to retrieve anything. That's why it lands in the same low-utility group as rereading and highlighting in John Dunlosky's 2013 review of ten study techniques. Halfway through you'll have beautiful notes on slides 1 to 170 and no idea whether any of it stuck. That's the illusion of competence, and slide decks produce it faster than anything, because a slide always looks familiar the second time.
There's a second problem. The research on slides suggests they make students passive. Debra Worthington and David Levasseur followed two semesters of a communication course for a 2015 paper in Computers & Education and found that the ones who brought the instructor's slides to class did worse, and they suspect it's because having the slides turns note-taking into filling in gaps rather than thinking. Students given the slides took fewer notes and needed less time to prepare for the final, and in one of their two studies did slightly better on it. Slides are efficient when you use them as a scaffold for your own thinking. They're a trap when you let them do the thinking.
How to study from lecture slides in four passes
Each pass goes through the whole deck, and each one is faster than the last. You decide which slides deserve notes and work only on those.
Pass 1: The index pass (one line per slide)
Open the deck and give each slide one line. Not a summary, a label. "Cell membrane structure." "Osmosis example, red blood cell." "Table comparing active vs passive transport." Type it in a document or write it on paper, numbered.
For 350 slides this takes about 90 minutes, and it's the highest-value 90 minutes of the week. When you're done you can see the shape of the course on two pages. Repeated topics stand out. So do the slides that are really just a title, a photo, or an announcement about office hours. Cross those out. In most decks a fifth of the slides disappear here.
Pass 2: The filter pass (find the exam inside the deck)
Now decide which of your index lines matter, using evidence rather than gut feeling.
- Learning objectives. If the syllabus or the first slide of each lecture lists them, every objective maps to a cluster of slides. Those clusters are the exam.
- Past papers or practice questions, if the professor releases them. One commenter on the Reddit thread put it well. Read a past question, then find the slides that answer it. You'll notice the same handful of slides keep coming up.
- Anything the professor built themselves. Custom diagrams, tables they clearly drew, a worked example that takes three slides. Nobody spends an hour making a diagram for something they won't test.
- Anything said twice. Repeated in two lectures, or mentioned in the summary slide, or flagged in a review session.
Mark each surviving line as core, supporting, or skip. Be ruthless with skip. A 350-slide deck typically boils down to 60 to 90 core slides. That number is what you're actually studying for.
Pass 3: The question pass (turn core slides into questions)
Take each core slide and write one or two questions that the slide answers. A heading becomes "what is X and why does it matter?" A diagram becomes "draw this from memory and label it." A table becomes "what's the difference between A and B?" A worked example becomes "solve a new version of this."
Do this before you feel ready. The pretesting effect is well documented. Lindsey Richland, Nate Kornell and Liche Kao showed in 2009 that people who attempted questions about a passage before reading it remembered more afterwards than people who spent the same time reading, even on the questions they got wrong. Writing the question and taking a guess primes your brain to notice the answer when you go back to the slide.
This is also where you write your actual notes, and only here. For each core slide, close it, answer your question out loud or on paper, then open the slide and fix what you got wrong. The correction is the note. It's short, it's in your words, and it only exists for the slides you couldn't already answer. From here on you don't study the slides. You study the questions. Cover the answers, work through the set, sort each one into "got it" and "missed," and go back to the slide only for the misses. The testing effect is the reason. In Henry Roediger and Jeffrey Karpicke's 2006 experiments, students who reread a passage looked stronger five minutes later, but a week later the group that had practised recalling it remembered 61 percent against 40 percent for the rereaders.
Each retrieval pass shrinks the "missed" pile. When you can go through the whole set twice without opening a slide, you're ready.
An 8-day plan for 350 slides
This assumes roughly three focused hours a day. Adjust the slide counts to your deck.
- Day 1. Pass 1, the full index. Cross out the filler. Skim the syllabus for learning objectives.
- Day 2. Pass 2. Mark core, supporting, skip. Find any past papers. Start Pass 3 on lectures 1 to 3.
- Days 3 to 5. Pass 3 on the remaining core slides, about 20 to 25 slides a day, answering each question closed-book before checking. Each morning, start with a 15-minute retrieval run on the previous day's questions.
- Day 6. Full retrieval pass on everything. Sort into got it and missed. Go back to slides for the misses only. Add any supporting slides that now look important.
- Day 7. Retrieval pass two, then any past paper under time pressure. Anything missed twice gets a proper 20-minute sit-down.
- Day 8. Light. One run through the missed pile in the morning, then stop. Eat properly and sleep. A memory you built over the week won't vanish because you didn't cram the night before.
The daily morning retrieval matters more than it looks. Spreading recall across days is the other high-utility technique in Dunlosky's review, and this plan has it built in without you needing to think about a schedule.
Common mistakes when studying from lecture slides
Studying the deck in order, front to back. Lecture 1 is usually the easiest and least tested. Your filter pass tells you where the weight is. Start there.
Treating every bullet as equal. Slides flatten everything. A throwaway example and the central mechanism get the same font size. Your job in Pass 2 is to put the hierarchy back.
Skipping the diagrams because they're "just pictures." Diagrams are the highest-yield slides in a science deck. If you can redraw it and label it from memory, you understand the process. If you can't, you don't, no matter how many times you've looked at it.
Trying to hold it all in your head at once. Three hundred and fifty slides is more than working memory can juggle, and the feeling of drowning is cognitive load, not stupidity. The index pass exists to get the whole deck out of your head and onto two pages so you can think about one piece at a time.
